The Haarweg is the biggest student complex owned and managed by Idealis. This same coorporation also owns many of the large student flats and a lot of students find a place to stay through Idealis. The Haarweg consists out of three main buildings, of various heights. In total, a 1040 students live there!
Every floor has four corridors on the Haarweg, varying from six to sixteen rooms per corridor. There are many types of rooms, some with a balcony or a own kitchen, whilst others only have an own sink or are just ‘basic’. Most corridors have a common, shared kitchen and the bigger corridors even have a shared living room.
If you are thinking about studying in Wageningen, it is wise to register yourself for Idealis as soon as possible. I subscribed at the first day registration was possible and I have been offered a room during the summer holidays before the start of term. I am living in a corridor shared by sixteen people for already two years now. It is an international corridor, so some of my neighbours are foreigners that have come to study in Wageningen for about half a year or so. This is great for your ‘international development’: you do not get the chance to try traditional Chinese sea weed soup every day!
A lot of people living in my corridor are very active at all kinds of associations. Because of that, we can only have dinner with áll sixteen of us at very rare occasions. Luckily enough there are always quite a bunch of people around, so we can share dinner and dishes. Once a year we organize a real ‘corridor dinner’ with all sixteen of us and sometimes even old room mates join in for this dinner too! The idea is that everybody prepares something for this dinner, which can anything from a cake to a spectacular main dish. Especially with the foreign students this can be a real surprise.
Besides all this, we always watch ‘Boer zoekt Vrouw’ (a Dutch tv series) with everyone who is around at that time (a lot of people go home for the weekend and return on Sunday evenings) and you can always knock on someone’s door for a little chat or when something troubles you.
It is not always easy to stay in touch with everybody, in such a big group. Though with a little effort and enthousiasm, every corridor can be changed into a very pleasant place to live and can offer benefits like cooking and sharing dinner together for everyone. It is very much recommended to just join in this ‘corridor life’ and enjoy what will be your new home!
