Almost everyone who comes to study in Wageningen will go and live in lodgings during their first year. The rooms in Wageningen are relatively cheap, compared to the rest of the Netherlands. Over the past years it has become a little more difficult to find a room. There are two options for renting a room: through Idealis (the student housing organization) or by renting a privately-owned room in a student residence.
For Idealis you can subscribe at the Idealis' site and respond to room advertisements that are offered on their website. If you’re the first on the list the room will be assigned to you. Idealis has several buildings, high-rise flats, houses and more, and there are different housing arrangements possible. You can have a room with its own sanitary facilities and a private kitchen. If you want to have more contact with people in your corridor, you might be interested in a room with common facilities, which means shared cooking and sanitary facilities. There are also options in between these two, such as a room with its own sink.
In a student residence you rent a room from a private individual. Wageningen has around 160 of this kind of houses. Many students think of a student residence as a more social and often cheaper alternative to Idealis-buildings. If you get a room through Idealis, the main lodging-house keeper, you never know whether you will end up in a nice corridor. There is a big chance you will enjoy it though, because atmosphere is something you create together!
Some houses are owned by a student association, and only members of the association can live there. Most houses, however, are open to everyone. Often you have to go ‘hospiteren’. This is a kind of intake meeting, to see if you fit into the group of people and the other way around. Once you get into a residence, there’s a big chance you can move to a bigger or nicer room later on.
The student residences are spread around the city. There are especially many in the Hoogstraat (main street) above the shops, and also around the central Market. It’s nice to be close to everything!
